This shows the duality of man, it is used to reflect the inner confusion of the soilders throughout the film.Joker wanting to do good but often submitting to our carnal / animalistic desires to do so. 

Unclear motives with born to kill written on his helmet but a peace symbol on his jacket . This shows that joker is  still unclear weather he is with war or against it. 

This is the start showing them losing their identify by having their heads shaved this show that they are all equal. The directors can manipulate our emotions by showing us they are having their hair staved, we have sympathy for the characters.    

"Better you then me" stating that it is better that they died and he didn't

"What do I think with the Americans involvement in the war, well I think we should win"
This character throughout the film is shown as being very selfish. Only caring about himself in war. He is very bold character with his muscular arms out having the magazines around his neck to show he is ready to fight.
The is quote in the film about him "He will not be happy unless there are grenades thrown at him". This is saying that he wil not coupe outside of war. Also by the end of the film you could say that the characters are given an identity as they are being filmed alone with out anyone else in the shot.
